Christmas Concert Rescheduled to 5pm to 6pm, Thursday 13 December

7/12/2018

Dear parents, carers and friends of Pullenvale State School,

Yesterday, I shared through various school communication channels that the date for the school Christmas concert had been rescheduled to Thursday 13 December from 2pm to 3pm.

I understand that some parents were disappointed that the original event was cancelled and that the rescheduled event was being held during class time. I have heard your concerns and certainly understand your disappointment.

For that reason, I have decided to move the event to 5pm to 6pm on Thursday 13 December.

I’d like to explain the reasons behind the original decisions and what has led to tonight’s decision to change the time.

First, Tuesday evening’s concert was cancelled based on information from the Bureau of Meteorology that showed a very large electrical storm was scheduled to hit Pullenvale at the time of the concert. If the event had proceeded, it could have led to the injury of attendees.

We did have a back-up plan, which was to move the concert to Fred’s Shed, but the size and ferocity of the storm posed too great a risk. I therefore made the decision to cancel the event to ensure the safety of our students, our families and our community.

As it was, the storm was nowhere near as serious as predicted, but as the saying goes, hindsight is a wonderful thing. I made a decision based on the information available to me at the time.

Second, the decision to reschedule the concert had to be made quickly given we are just over a week from the end of school. I consulted with my teaching staff and together we identified next Thursday between 2pm and 3pm as the optimal solution.

At this time of year, no time is a good time to reschedule an event such as this given the number of events at other schools, in our communities and with our families and friends. But after considering multiple factors including staff availability (without whom the concert would not be possible), other community and Pullenvale State School events such as the Grade 6 graduation, we felt that next Thursday between 2pm and 3pm was the best option.

Given the feedback received from parents today about the difficulty of attending a 2pm event, I have again consulted with my teaching staff. Those staff who are available next Thursday evening have offered to step in to lead the concert for the teachers who are unable to attend, meaning we are now able to schedule the event for 5pm.

I apologise for any inconvenience or concern caused by today’s earlier announcement. Decisions like this are never easy nor are they ever made in isolation. Often, the result is unpopular. But as Principal, I always try to make the best decision with the information available to me and with the safety and wellbeing of all in mind.

The students and families of Pullenvale State School remain my number one priority. I apologise that the reason behind this decision wasn’t communicated at the time of the announcement, but I was focused on giving parents, friends and community members as much notice as possible of the revised date and time.

I hope you understand and appreciate the reasons behind the original decision and I trust that the new time will make it easier you, your family members and friends to attend. And regardless of the weather, the show will go on, with Fred’s Shed the back-up plan.

I look forward to welcoming you for what will undoubtedly be a terrific evening of celebrations and festivities filled with the wonderful performances of our talented students.

Kind regards,

SAM SYMES
