Overview
At Pullenvale State School we value our Physical Education program as well as the myriad of sporting opportunities our students are offered throughout the year. We view physical activity as an essential part of a student's wellbeing and encourage all children to engage in as many opportunities as possible.
What sets us apart???
For a school with a student population of around 400 students we offer a great range of experiences for students of all ages.
Touch Football Academy
Our Touch Football Academy is going from strength to strength. The program runs for 12 months and is open for any student in the school who is aged between 10-12 years of age. Trials are conducted in Term 4 of the preceding year of which 3 teams are selected – a boys' & girls' team as well as a development team. The teams train twice a week and are involved in many competitions throughout the year culminating with the QLD All Schools Touch tournament in November, as well as the Ipswich Touch Club competition in Term 3 & 4. In 2019 both our boys' and girls' teams finished in the top 16 and top 8 in the State respectively at QLD All Schools and both teams won their respective division at the Ipswich Club Competition, which is a massive accomplishment considering the size of our little school.
We have developed a number of partnerships which provides a pathway for students who wish to further develop as a touch player. Our partners: Runcorn SHS Touch Excellence and UQ Rebels provide much valued resources and opportunities for our academy players. Some of our academy players have received sporting scholarships at private high schools and have gone onto make representative teams in both the school and club systems.
Our PE teacher runs a Touch Football unit every year in PE classes which culminates in all students being offered the opportunity to play in the Ipswich Junior Touch competition during Term 3 and Term 4 on a Thursday afternoon after school representing the school. This not only improves their touch football skills but also and probably more importantly begins to teach students the valuable lessons of being a good team member and sportsmanship.
Volleyball Program
The school's volleyball program is another example of a fantastic opportunity that our students have been given that has seen huge participation numbers as well as great success at the QLD Primary Schools Cup.
Our volleyball program is now in its 7th year at Pullenvale. The program has continued to grow every year, starting off with 4 teams being entered into the QLD State Titles in 2013 and now to 24 teams in 2019. Almost every student in Grades 4-6 participates in the State Cup. The program was provided with a lot of direction by ex AIS and Australian Volleyball player – Mr Randall Appleby. It is taught to all students across the school in PE during Term 3 of every year.
Over the years we have seen 4 QLD State titles come home to Pullenvale with our Open girls winning 3 Years in a row 2016-2018 and our Open boys winning in 2016. A few of those students have since received volleyball scholarships at private high schools in the area and have been selected into QLD Volleyball Representative Teams. SEE VIDEO
Interschool Sports
Students in Years 5 and 6 are involved in the West Akuna Interschool Sports program. Students travel to various venues by bus to play other schools in our district.
Sports offered in Semester 1: netball, touch football, netball
Sports offered in Semester 2: basketball, rugby league, flag-tag
Carnivals – The Big 3
The 'Big 3' in school sports refer to athletics, swimming and cross country. We offer carnivals for all 3 of these disciplines.
Athletics
Traditionally the athletics program runs in Term 2 with the school's Senior Athletics Carnival (4-6) and Junior Athletics Carnival (P-3) taking place in the second half of Term 2. Our Senior Athletics Carnival will be held on our newly rejuvenated oval.
Swimming
Our swimming carnival is normally held in the last couple weeks of Term 4 as the District trials for swimming normally are held in the first couple weeks of Term 1 the following year.
Cross Country
Our school's senior (Year 4-6) and junior (P-3) cross country/fun run is normally held at the end of Term 1 each year. Our students prepare for these events during PE lessons in Term 1 as well as before school training provided by our PE teacher in the lead up in Term 1.
Representative Pathways
Representative pathways for all sports including the 'Big 3' events work as follows. If a student qualifies and is selected in our school team they travel to the Northern Eagles District Trials. If they are selected into the district team they travel to the Met West Regional trials. If they are selected into the regional team they travel to the QLD State Titles from which they can be selected into the State team who compete at the Nationals.
Outside School Hours Offerings
Throughout the year we engage with a variety of organisations that offer sporting opportunities for our students here at Pullenvale. In the past we have had AFL Auskick, Milo In 2 Cricket, TRL, Netball QLD and Touch Football Australia. Information about these offerings is sent out via social media and flyer.
Lunchtime Sports
We always find interesting things to occupy our students at lunch. It may be a simple game of soccer, teachers versus students at netball, touch and volleyball, flying a kite or a handball competition.

Extra-Curricular Sports
For the aspiring athletes or just kids who love sport there are many opportunities available throughout the year that they can participate in. These include:
· Volleyball QLD Primary Schools Cup – Held at Craigslea High
· All Schools Touch
· All Hallows Touch
· T20 Blast Cricket
· NRL Development Cup – Held at various playing fields
District Sport
Pullenvale is also a member of the West Akuna Sports Association and therefore participates in the Interschool sports competition held in both Semester One and Semester Two.
Students who display an excellence in a given sport also have the opportunity to trial for district teams in most popular sports which is the first step along the representative pathways. If they are successful in making the West Akuna team the next step is the regional team (Met West), followed by the state team (QLD) and lastly the national team (Australia).
